History

When in 1494 Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica during his second voyage to America, the island was already inhabited by the Native American tribe Aravaki. At the beginning of XV century Spanish colonizers invaded and gradually the local population has been destroyed and in its place were settled black slaves. So Jamaica became a plantation country, one of the leading exporters of sugar, coffee and rum. The country became a refuge for sea pirates, who were located in the public service and robbed the Spanish ships. In 1670 Britain seized Jamaica and turned it into its colony. In the period 1760 – 1824 slaves kept on having many, but unsuccessful uprisings. In 1838 slavery was finally abolished. In place of the blacks, workers were imported from India and China. Jamaica needed a healthy workforce to maintain the established agro-industrial structure of Jamaica. In 1959, the island got the right of self-government, and on August 6, 1962 became an independent state. Today 96.1 percent of the population is Jamaican whom mainly has a Christian faith.
